300 models were added during the second round of this contest, lasting between March 29 and April 7. Together there is already a total of more than 1000 models in the game. All of them were evaluated now.

As usual, we would like to give an honorable mention to some other nice models which caught our eye during evaluation. It’s no secret these models have a good chance of grabbing a prize in the third round. We arranged them into three categories:

Announcing results of the 1st part of our designer contest (April 1, 2020)
Ten days since the start of our ad hoc designer contest “Everyday necessities for life during a pandemic” it’s time to announce the winner of the first round! We also made a selection of other models that could be handy (not only) during isolation. Some of them can make your life easier, some make it more fun or let you learn something new.
In just ten days, we received more than 700 ideas for various tools, gadgets, and toys, which is totally awesome! Once again you prove that your activeness and creativity have no limits.
In these times, when there is a huge lack of PPE (personal protective equipment) worldwide, the 3D printing community is doing its best to help where it is needed the most. Many of you print protective face shields and also try to come up with other types of protective equipment – we discussed various options in this article and we also explained the potential risks of home-made 3D printed respirators. Also, our homeland, the Czech Republic, was among the first countries which made wearing a face mask required by law. And every day, more countries follow. This is why there are many models, which focus on face masks – either to make them easier to wear or to help with their production (even at home). So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the results.
Winner of Original Prusa i3 MK3S 3D printer
We made a shortlist of potential candidates, and after careful consideration, we decided to give the award to the author of the ‘Face Mask Pozicer‘. It’s simple, but very useful for anyone wearing glasses, either dioptrical or shades. All of us “four-eyed” know how annoying it is to wear a face mask and fog your glasses each time you exhale. This nifty little thing really makes a difference. You can attach it onto any face mask, both fabric or paper. It can be printed very quickly and uses just a small amount of material. If you fill a whole print sheet with them, you can then give away the surplus to your friends or relatives.

Tips for other useful 3D models during a pandemic

Any even the cheapest medical mask has a metal plate that is compressed to the shape of the nose. What you will achieve with this plastic part on the nose – everyone’s nose is different. You’re obsessed with the coronavirus. The jury’s decision is just an epic fail.
While I am disappointed that I didn’t get chosen for honorable mention or first prize, @dmitry.vorpanzer has a point. Many masks already have a small metal bar you use to bend to the shape of your face. I’m not trying to shame/put down the user of this print ( Just in case anyone gets offended). Congrats to the author who won this round though!
Thank you for your feedback. The lack of face masks in stores forces people to make their own. Usually, these face masks don’t have a metal plate. So this model is useful, I think.
All people have different nose shapes, many of those who print do not know how to 3D model, they can only download other people’s models. How will this detail help them? I consider the detail useless. Conversely, many of those who can create original and creative 3D models do not have a 3D printer. A 3d printer is a tool for implementing your ideas – like a LEGO set, so that you can make something that you can’t buy. Coronavirus is a problem that needs to be addressed, but you don’t need to make it the main idea of all 3D models. The winner in the toys section will be a composite model of a coronavirus cell, is it? This is ridiculous.

Medical things should be handled by professionals who conduct appropriate tests. People need things to brighten up their time while they sit at home, that’s what the idea of the contest should be
I don’t know if homemade masks should be promoted, as a lot of the time they may seem to work, but actually don’t filter out the things that they were supposed to block out. The medical supplies should be handled by professionals so that people do not get a fake sense of security.
Data on DIY filters is out there to study. Even a piece of cotton cloth is more effective than nothing.

Great models
If the awards will be going to designs that are to do with protective wear, you should probably remove the part from the contest that says, “Please do not enter the contest with any protective wear against the coronavirus.”
Has this design been looked at or approved by any medical association? Is it safe to be promoting a print that may give people a false sense of security? I understand the urgency of the situation but I don’t think it is a good idea to be promoting such models that aren’t tested and approved by some group of medical professionals.

Is this a 1st April fools joke? I can’t believe you guys couldn’t put subjectivity aside, even Ondrej had to ask for the source of the model in order to make one usable for him (I gess) any of the 20 honorable mentions should have won this round. This is the main reason why I don’t participate in this contest anymore. For example, when you asked for an original model in the Halloween contest, the winner was a copyrighted character. I feel pity for the designers. You did it great guys.
Fully agree. The winning model went against the one rule the judges said we should not design for, protective wear. If they wanted everyone to design for coronavirus masks, don’t tell people to make educational items. Plus, until this is formally tested, I would treat it as non-compliant with any health standards. There is a reason why protective equipment takes a long time to certify and in my opinion, it is really not good practice for Prusa to be promoting untested models so prominently.
The biggest problem with contests run by J Prusa is lack of transparency. Judging should be done by an independent panel not affiliated with PR.

says a lot about anybody that didn’t make this list of 20. You don’t have ” a snowball’s chance in ” of winning. The only way PR is going to listen is if everyone outside the 20 withdraws their entry. I did not expect to win, but I enjoyed the process of creating something that I thought was very practical and could be used by anyone, even after the pandemic.
Ondřej, your job will be easier for the next round because there is one less entry to consider ( not that I believe you will look outside these 20 ).

Even though I understand and partially agree with the critique and disappointment in the comments above, it’s always important to remember that as a private company, Prusa Research can decide to give the prizes to whomever they like. I we keep bi*ching about the results every time, they will simply stop doing the contests, which is a scenario in which everybody loses.
On the other hand, a lot of the hurt feelings can be prevented by more accurate definition and subsequent following of the rules, e.g. are only protective devices per se excluded, or does it also concern accessories and hacks for them? Is printabilitity really a strict rule? Is it allowed to enter with models that were already submitted for previous costests? Is sharing of the source file a criterion? Etc.

My model deserves victory in view of complexity (toilet paper counter), but I would not be offended if the worthy model took 1st place! I spent 5 days on 3D modeling and calculations. Thanks to the organizers. I have great ideas for the next rounds, but you beat off all desire. I think in the second round the cube from the casino wins, and in the 3rd round cupids for children with letters. Do you guys really think that we won’t notice that you violated your own rule about the subject of the virus? I think that I will delete everything that I posted on your site.
I don’t know if I agree with comments calling this a “safety” item. Were in uncharted waters, and cities/countries are starting to require untested masks to go out in public. This seems like a pretty handy item for anyone with glasses, with not a single readily-available alternative.
I do feel kind of dumb losing to a curved piece of plastic…….and feel it was a bit of a grey area with the rules…….but all of my entries were clearly beaten by whoever build a Foosball game out of a freakin box, so I have no stake in it 😀
I personally find it a great winner. Not everything has to be complex and big in order to be really functional and good. Some things are simple, you just need to be lucky to be the person to find the solution and realize it.
Painful :
I do understand the pain some people can feel by this winner. I can’t deny to have felt a few doubts for a seconds. But I think its also a lesson for some to look different at these challenges. Of course it is nice to maybe win a printer, but is this really your main reason to be part of this community?
Who is the winner? :
I’m seeing it as a potluck dinner challenge. It is not who made the best dish and wins the bottle of whine. We are ALL winners in having an awesome dinner with the best food you might else never have tasted. In our case where ALL winners in sharing a huge folder of awesome 3D prints that might never have existed without this challenge. The greatest,funniest or most use full things all free to download.
Beside that. I got a good practice in solution thinking and 3D modeling. And I get the brag about what I made to my family and friends. It even might turn out to helping humanity! More then worth it for me!
With the same success it is possible to draw a cube, to think of a use in the coronavirus and wait for the victory
If your cube helps entire countries wear required masks more comfortably, then I agree. I’ve never worn a facemask with glasses…..but if its anything like wearing a full motorcycle helmet with glasses, then this design deserves more than a printer- the designer deserves international fame and publicity. How will your cube make a difference? How is your design(s) more universal and beneficial?
I feel that there are numerous complex designs that deserve awards…..most are superior to my own. Especially the Foosball box and Flitzpuck……but the nose pieces WILL be used by millions, and can be printed by those of us sewing in areas where homemade/printed PPE is not accepted by hospitals.
You don’t know anything about sarcasm. Why not billions? these millions you mentioned won’t even know about the existence of this detail. One grandmother who sews masks with her hands will do more good. In medical masks that are sold in pharmacies, this detail is already there.

Toto je má první soutěž, a taky asi poslední. Pokud jsem dobře pochopil pravidla, tak se soutěžě netýkají návrhy ohledně KOVID19.
A myslím si, že spousta z nás mají různé zlepšováky týkající se KOVID19 které jsou možná lépe propracované a užitečnější a hlavně použitelnější a do soutěžě je nedali, protože respektovali pravidla. Nehledě na to, že tento zlepšovák bude sedět jednomu člověku ze sta, možná ani to ne. Stačí kousek plastu, nahřát nad svíčkou, a mám totéž přímo na můj nos…
Tato soutěž mi přijde jako zaujatá na modely KOVID19. Spoustu lidí dělá pěkné, propracované a užitečné věci, které pobaví nebo pomohou. Osobně si vážím firmy PR, jsem jejich fanda, ale tímhle mě zklamali

Subjectivity strikes again! You must choose a print for the whole family or something you can use more than once or even something more people will like, the “card bored” or that classy chess were the real winners this time.
More than encourage the designers to upload something worthy, you are killing the inspiration and desires to upload something. it is obvious you love puzzles, someone can tell just by watching the featured prints, and more from the winner profile.
You have to put what you like aside and choose something that more people will love, also thinking on what will look awesome in the Prusa´s publications or something the people will understand only by watching, what will we look in Facebook or twitter with this winner? Some fkn cylinders and some hexagons, in other side, the chess, the foosball, or other board games are self explanatory.

I showed the foggy glasses fix for mask wearers and my wife, a physical therapist required to work now during this epidemic, immediately wanted to try it – if it works we will print a lot more, as she immediately started naming doctors, nurses, and grocery store clerks, all these people complaining of foggy glasses when wearing their masks at work.

Please do not enter the contest with any protective wear against the coronavirus. Untested prints could do more harm than good and actually help spread the infection instead of fighting it. I know that the main purpose of these contests is to attract more people to your site. That’s fine. But, please spend more time clearly defining the rules.
The first thought that came to my mind when I saw the winner print was “WTF”. Next thought: “…Please do not enter the contest with any protective wear against the coronavirus….”
Don’t get me wrong: It is not necessary for the most complex part with 100 colors to win, but creativity should play a role
